EROTICISM

An important collection of licentious images about love in all times and countries. From fertile graffiti to the first multiple xylograph copies; and then on to calcographs, aquaforts, lithographs and finally photographs. Almost all the artists that created these images, and the people that distributed them, were persecuted: no other iconographic subject, such as eroticism and cheerful pornography, has ever been considered as subversive and dangerous by the dominant culture: politic, religious and "official".

Notwithstanding the enormous number of images produced on sexual themes, the subject has always been ignored in all histories of art and photography; the images in the Fototeca Storica Nazionale archive could be used to represent a historical "missing chapter" that has always been censored in the name of a hypocritical morality.
